7 signs your Google Ads account is burning money (and what an audit catches)

7 signs your Google Ads account needs a professional audit

Here's a number that surprises most business owners: when I audit a Google Ads account that someone else set up, I routinely find 20% to 40% of the budget going to clicks that never had a chance of converting. Not because the platform is broken. Because nobody ever looked closely.

Google Ads doesn't warn you when money leaks. Campaigns show green dashboards, spend flows, and everything looks fine until someone actually reads the search terms report or checks where conversions dropped. If any of the seven signs below sound familiar, your account probably has money hiding in plain sight.

The 7 warning signs

  • 1. You can't say what a lead costs you. Ask yourself right now: what did your last lead cost? If the answer starts with "um", tracking is either broken or ignored, which means every optimization decision you've made was a guess.
  • 2. One campaign runs everything. Search, display, and performance max all mixed together, or worse, a single "smart" campaign you've never opened since launch. Mixed campaigns make diagnosis impossible; Google spends where it wants, not where you'd choose.
  • 3. Your ads point at the homepage. Every click landing on a general homepage is a click paying a tax. Ad-specific landing pages routinely double conversion rates. If yours goes to a page built for everyone, it converts no one.
  • 4. The search terms report has never been read. This one report shows exactly what people typed before clicking. In most unaudited accounts, a third of it is job seekers, students, and freebie hunters paying your CPC.
  • 5. Spend grew but leads didn't. Budget creeps up over months while results stay flat. That gap between spend growth and lead growth has causes, and they're all findable: keyword drift, auction inflation, ad fatigue, or tracking decay.
  • 6. Nobody has touched the account in months. Accounts need weekly attention, monthly at absolute minimum. An untouched account isn't stable; it's slowly bleeding through expired ads, lost impressions, and settings that silently changed.
  • 7. Your agency reports impressions, not revenue. Big impression numbers and pretty graphs are how underperforming accounts defend themselves. If reports don't end at cost per lead and closed deals, the report is hiding the story.

What a proper audit actually checks

A real audit isn't a dashboard screenshot. When I review an account, here's the checklist:

  1. Conversion tracking integrity: is every conversion real, deduplicated, and attributed correctly? This alone changes decisions downstream.
  2. Search terms mining: the exact queries eating budget, sorted by waste, ready to become negative keywords.
  3. Campaign structure: whether budgets, locations, and match types line up with how your customers actually buy.
  4. Ad copy and asset strength: which messages earn clicks at reasonable cost, and which ones quietly drag quality score down.
  5. Landing page match: whether the page answers the promise the ad made, on mobile, in three seconds.
  6. Bid and budget efficiency: where automation helps and where it's spending your money to learn things you already knew.

That process takes me about two hours per account, and it ends with a short list: keep this, kill this, fix this first. No 40-page report nobody reads.

Why I do these for free

You might wonder why anyone would give this away. Simple: the audit is how you find out whether I'm worth hiring, and it's how I find out whether I can actually help you. If your account is healthy, I'll tell you so and leave you alone. If there's real waste, fixing it pays for my management many times over, and we both know it before anyone commits to anything.

So here's my offer, stated plainly: a free 30-minute Google Ads consultation, no obligation. I'll review your account live, tell you the two or three biggest issues I see, and you can take that list and fix it yourself if you want. If you'd rather hand it over, we can talk about that too.

Worst case, you spend half an hour and learn exactly where your money leaks. Best case, that list becomes the reason your next quarter looks different. Either way you win, and that's why I keep doing these.

Book your free consultation here, or hit the WhatsApp button. Bring your account, I'll bring the questions that find the money.
